The new American spot by longtime friends brings wood-fired cuisine with European influences to Partition Street in Saugerties.

When you take over a restaurant space with a fully functioning wood-fire oven, it would be a shame not to put it to good use. This was exactly the mindset of the Rodriguez and Della Chiesa families when their new American restaurant, The Kitchen at Salt & Fire, took over the former Bella Luna Italian restaurant in Saugerties.

The Saugerties restaurant scene tends to have less turnover than the surrounding towns and cities, so openings are notable. In late August, Salt & Fire celebrated its grand opening in the former Bella Luna location. The business is co-owned by Jorge and Rihanna Rodriguez, who are also the proprietors of the beloved Mexican restaurant and bar Main Street Cafe, and chef Joseph Della Chiesa and his wife Kaitlyn. At Salt & Fire, old world techniques like wood-fired cooking infuse a contemporary, locally sourced menu. Global culinary influences range from Spain (oven-roasted chorizo and peach flatbread) to Korea (koji barbecue pork belly meatballs) to France (cod a la grenobloise), plus raw bar offerings like oysters and shrimp. Inside, you could easily be in a European bistro with exposed brick and beams, wood floors, and white tablecloths, and rooftop seating for the warmer days.

The Saugerties Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting on Friday, August 26 for a new restaurant, Salt & Fire. The restaurant first opened its doors to customers, a so-called soft opening, on July 6.

The owners, two couples who describe themselves as friends, located their new venture in the former Bella Luna Restaurant at 124 Partition Street. The restaurant describes its offerings as contemporary American cuisine, which owner Rhianna Rodriguez described as an eclectic blending of various cuisine. The other partners in the restaurant are her husband, Jorge Rodriguez, Joseph Della Chilies and Kaitlyn Della Chiesa. The Rodriguez’s also own the Main Street Cafe, a popular Mexican restaurant, around the corner on Main Street.

I heard about Salt and Fire when I was looking at an Ulster County Facebook group for food lovers and restaurants. One of the posts caught my attention. It was from a food photographer named Jason Bover, and he said that he had been to Salt and Fire to get a sneak peek at some of the dishes. Jason was very impressed with what he saw and tasted. Here’s a quote.

The wood fired oven sets this place apart. Steak, duck, pork, and flatbreads came out with a nice char and smokey flavor you can only get from cooking over wood.
